NEW YORK Graduate Alison Stone will be reading in the NYQ Reading Series, Sunday, October 12 at 6:30 p.m. at the Bowery Poetry Club, 308 Bowery, between Bleecker and Houston Streets, New York, NY. She will also be doing a Q&A on Thursday, October 23 at 4:00 p.m. at St. Thomas Aquinas College, 125 Route 340, Sparkill, NY. Graduate Joe Gannon will be reading from his debut novel, Night of the Jaguar, Friday, October 17 at 6:30 p.m. at Mysterious Bookshop, 58 Warren Street, New York, NY. Graduate Jina Ortiz will be hosting a launch party for the anthology All About Skin: Short Fiction by Women of Color, co-edited with Rochelle Spencer, on Saturday, October 25 from 5–8p.m. at La Casa Azul Bookstore, 143 E. 103rd Street, New York, NY. OHIO Dzvinia Orlowsky will be taking part in workshops and giving a reading —in celebration of being named a 2014 Ohio Co-Poet of the Year by the Ohio Poetry Day Association—Saturday, October 25 at the Hayner House in Troy, OH. PUBLICATIONS & BLOGS Graduate James Anderson’s short story “The Hat Salesman,” was selected as a finalist for Solstice: A Magazine of Diverse Voices annual short fiction competition, and is included in the summer/fall 2014 awards issue. In February of 2015, Caravel Books, New York will publish his debut novel, The Never-Open Desert Diner. Student Jenifer DeBellis’ poems will be featured in Undertow Tanka Review. She is also the editor of Pink Panther Magazine, and just published Issue 21, which includes an essay by fellow student Andrea Davies. Graduate Carol Owens Campbell’s poem, “Interview with a River,” appears in in the October “Tribute to Auvillar” edition of One Trick Pony Review, an online literary journal. Graduate Faye Rapoport DesPres’ personal essay, “Still Life with Writing,” will be published in the debut issue of BOXY Magazine, a new arts and lifestyle publication. Graduate Beth Richard’s essay, “Before, After,” was selected as a finalist for Solstice Literary Magazine: A Magazine of Diverse Voices annual nonfiction competition and is included in the summer/fall 2014 awards issue. Graduate Faye Snider’s essay, “Fannie Farmer, Mom and Me,” will be published in the debut issue of BOXY Magazine. Writer-in-residence Mike Steinberg’s craft essay, “Planning For Surprise: Writing and Teaching the Personal Essay” appears in this month’s issue of TriQuarterly, and his essay “One Story, Two Narrators: Reflection's Role In Writing and Teaching Personal Narratives,” appears in the current issue of  Solstice: A Magazine of Diverse Voices. Alison Stone’s poem “Hercules in Retirement” was recently published in the Rust/Dust/Lust issue of Slipstream. TEACHING, RESIDENCIES, & CONFERENCES Jenifer DeBellis was recently hired as an adjunct English instructor in Creative Writing and Developmental English at Baker College. Graduate Susan Lemere recently received a scholarship to attend a week-long Arts in Health Care Intensive at the University at Buffalo, and she will be leading three creative workshops this fall in Ware, MA as part of the Bird Hill Workshop Series. Graduate Cathy Cultice Lentes has started a Writing Club for fourth and fifth grade students in the Meigs Local School District of Ohio, where she works as an Educational Diagnostician. Student Kim Suhr will present the breakout session, “The Importance of Writing Communities in Your Career," on Saturday, November 15, 9–5 p.m. at the Publishing Institute hosted by Mount Mary University in Milwaukee, WI. OTHER NEWS Faculty member Laura Williams McCaffrey’s story, “Into the Vast,” has won the 2014 Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators Magazine Merit Award for fiction. Graduate Debbie Merion’s book, Solving the College Admissions Puzzle, A Guide for Students and Families about College Selection, Essay Writing, and High-Stakes Testing —written in collaboration with John B. Boshoven, M.A., M.S.W and Geraldine Markel, Ph.D— is a Gold Medal Winner of the 2014 Global Ebook Awards.  She was recently interviewed about the book and her work with students on college application essays on WXYZ TV, “Mom's a Genius” Beth Richards and her colleague Saleh Keshawarz recently received a grant from the State Department via the U.S. Embassy in Kabul to work with 16 private universities in Northern Afghanistan over the next two years, providing mentoring and training for instructors and administrators there in curriculum design and administrative procedures and practices.
