Soul Compartment by Jasen Sousa
Soul Compartment
For now, we are friends, because addiction
has decided to hang with someone else.
His eyes are open, his pupils are wide,
and he witnesses me for the first time in awhile.
He comments about my hat I’ve had for months,
and the earring that has hung from my lobe
for even longer, and how much he likes them.
We have a conversation I know
he will remember, I speak from my soul
that I usually keep locked inside my glove
compartment with my wallet.
This is a day to cherish
because it might be weeks
before I hear from him again.
